2014 Program and Summer Reading List

Posted on May 12.14

As we come together this summer to celebrate SVWC’s 20th anniversary, we’ll explore the world of story – from Biblical and Greek tragedy to economics and world affairs, with a few tall tales thrown in. Take a look at the 2014 preliminary program and get a glimpse of the STORIES WE TELL. Click HERE to view 2014 program.

The lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us, and whether your lawn chair is on a beach or a balcony, our summer reading list will transport you around the globe. You might want to start in Japan, where GRETEL EHRLICH shares stories through the eyes of those who survived an epic storm in FACING THE WAVE: A JOURNEY IN THE WAKE OF THE TSUNAMI. Then imagine dropping yourself into SCOTT TUROW’s fictional Kindle County, setting for his legal thriller IDENTICAL, a story of murder, deception and identical twins. Move on to Israel, where journalist ARI SHAVIT’s MY PROMISED LAND: THE TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY OF ISRAEL tells his country’s history through stories starting with his great-grandfather. Finally, end on a light note in DAVE BARRY’s Florida, so you can laugh out loud reading YOU CAN DATE BOYS WHEN YOU’RE FORTY: DAVE BARRY ON PARENTING AND OTHER TOPICS HE KNOWS VERY LITTLE ABOUT. And if you still have time after you come back around to your lawn chair, we’re sure you’ll enjoy the other titles on our Summer Reading List. Click HERE to view the 2014 Summer Reading list.

What Our Writers are Reading: A. Scott Berg

Posted on May 10.14

In an ongoing series of interviews, SVWC associate director and nationally recognized journalist ANNE TAYLOR FLEMING asks those writers associated with the conference about their reading habits. Each month learn about the books they love, the ones they reread, those that influenced their own writing.  We hope you will follow along as we compile a living literary archive and leave you with a list of books — new and old, fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose — you won’t want to miss.
